Wednesday

We're ready for kitchen/laundry room demolition.

We got a call from the renovators at 9:00 this morning, saying they'd be at our house tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. to begin demolition.

We began clearing the space in the living room and dining room.

We took the furniture out, the rugs, and the curtains. We expect a lot of debris as the wall comes down.

We've moved our kitchen essentials into our suite.

Luckily, we had our owner's closet renovated back in October. We had plenty of room to make a little pantry.

We'll store our new appliances here in the dining room. They arrive next Tuesday but won't be installed until the end of December. We'll also make room here for our current refrigerator.

Our renovators will donate our stove to a local charity.

They will do the same with our refrigerator at the end of the project after they install our new appliances.

The microwave will get donated too. I repaired it when we moved in, finding replacement parts online.

The dishwasher might get trashed. It needs a new pump. They'll salvage the new garbage disposal I installed so we can use it with our new sink.

We'll get new LED lights in the ceiling that will be sealed.

There will be a LED strip above the cabinets on the plant shelf. There will also be a LED light strip embedded in the underside of the upper cabinets. Since they use a router to make the groove, there is no need for a light shield on the bottom of the upper cabinets.

This is the wall that will be cut out. The cutout will follow the lines of the inset portion, leaving the shelf above along with the wall to the ceiling.

The countertop from the kitchen will come out a foot beyond the wall, providing serving space, another eating bar, or just a place to sit and talk to the cook--and be out of the way.

On this side of the wall, the ceiling will follow the line of the plant shelf on the left. The upper cabinets will be removed and the wall cut out to the living room. There will be two square poles on either end that will remain, along with the wall with the switches. Cooking on this stove was like cooking in a cave. The microwave hangs low right in your face.

Our bedroom is looking more and more like a hotel suite. We have an office, sofa, bed, TV, bathroom, closet, and coffee maker.

John is happy with his computer game set up in the bedroom.

Our sunroom is holding the rest of our furniture. It's cozy. Every room should have a sofa or two, right?

Toby is going to miss his rugs.

We were scrambling today to remove stuff.

The laundry room cabinets have always been poorly organized.

There will be new cabinets in here, including new upper cabinets for this side. New sink and faucet, too. The countertop will be quartz like the kitchen.

This bar is going to be lowered to countertop height.

We'll finally get to use our cool Emco counter stools.

I can't lie. I will be so happy to see these cabinets and countertop go.

The last thing we have to figure out is whether to install a vent fan for the new stove. There are all sorts of issues involved: the height, the narrow duct, the lack of wall/ceiling space to hide the mechanicals, etc. We have several potential solutions, including not having one at all, which would be a shame because the duct is already there and vented through the roof.
