Friday

I zoomed in on Clearwater Beach on our Dunedin Causeway walk this morning. The skies were clear; the temperature was perfect.

Not a cloud in the sky. (John’s photo)

The water was crystal clear. (John’s photo)

I kept my after lunch appointment with the outdoor gym at Weaver Park. I got to talk with two of my gym buddies, getting to know them better. It was a very pleasant 83 degrees with a good breeze.

I didn’t intend to coordinate my shoes with my yoga mat, but . . . there you have it.

We went to Beall’s outlet next to H&R Block before our tax appointment and went shopping. I got this new shirt and socks; John got two pairs of shorts and socks; and Toby got some toys. (Looks like UF colors on top of this mat.)

We took the golf cart to Azteca Huarache for dinner.

We saw neighbors down the street there.

Then back to our neighborhood.

Thursday

Our day began by locking ourselves out of our house for our first early morning Toby walk, caused by a cavalcade of errors by both of us. It’s a wonder we haven’t done this on a regular basis. Our back up is our lockbox on the back door with a key inside. The only problem is that we never use it so we forgot the combination. Of course, the combination is in my phone, but it, too, was locked in the house, charging. Some days, you should just stay in bed!

Since we had nothing else to do, we proceeded to walk Toby. When we were almost home, we started wracking our brains for the combination. Finally, John remembered: it wasn’t a sequence of numbers to remember but a pattern of numbers on the keypad. Once he remembered the pattern, it was easy to get in.

Training was a challenge tonight. Above, John has Toby heeling and auto sitting which he learned in obedience training.

Here, Toby is learning to get between John’s legs and sitting. This maneuver would be useful if there were a loose dog and you’re trying to protect your dog, at least that’s what the trainer said.

Toby picked up on it quickly, but I don’t see it happening in the real world. Maybe, I don’t have enough trust that a dog is going to do that with another dog on the loose.

We really struggled tonight. We get that with this training we are bonding and Toby’s getting to think and be around other dogs. That is all good. But many of the tricks seem pointless and silly. They each require a huge amount of effort and many repetitions. We feel we’re still struggling with basic obedience. For the second time in our almost two years of training, we both wanted to just walk out and go home.

There were times tonight when we were both clueless. It’s very frustrating. John said the other dogs struggled too. Next week is our last class. We both need a break from dog training for a while. We dread going all week, and we feel guilty for not practicing enough. Blah, blah, blah. It’s easy to take it personally and get down about it, especially when some of the other dogs are doing really difficult tricks and are so well behaved. Our trainer reminds us not to compare. All dogs are different and learn at their own pace.

The main criticism we both get is that we’re not being the alpha dog to him and that allows him to be too assertive and too hyper. I hear the criticism but I don’t know how to be that person 24/7. I think we are tough on him and make many, many demands. It’s all very confusing. Maybe, we’re closer to a breakthrough with him than we know, and soon things will begin to click. Our trainer says to “keep on swimming.”

Maybe it’s like the lockbox from this morning: it’s not the number combination that got us inside; it was understanding the pattern of the numbers. In our dog training, we’re punching numbers and feeling “locked out,” when we really need to see the pattern.

Wednesday

We enjoyed temperatures from 70-83 degrees today. There was a strong northern breeze all day, making even 80 degrees feel cool. We rode our bikes to the causeway and then walked.

We picked up egg foo yung on the way home for lunch. Afterwards, I rode my bike to the gym to exercise.

It was a beautiful day.

One of our walks around Highlander Park (We walked there twice today.)

We passed a neighbor on her golf cart on our last Toby walk. She handed off a bag full of these treats to us. This is all that’s left once we got home.

Tomorrow is Trick class at Petsmart and H&R Block tax filing appointment. This year, as last year, I sent all documents electronically through their secure app, so when we show up it will be just to sign. We could sign electronically, but we like to see her and ask questions.

Replacements, Ltd. is sending us a check for some of our dishes. Many were not deemed to be in mint condition and some were damaged in transit. I think we’ll break even once we factor in shipping and tape. Oh, well. We accomplished our goal to get rid of stuff, and that’s one heavy box that won’t have to be moved again or disposed of when we’re gone. Meanwhile, the CD copying project continues, another heavy box we’re ready to get rid of.

Tuesday

The 55th annual Highlander Games are being held in Dunedin this weekend. Over 10,000 people are expected. More information

The set up at Highlander Park is just getting started. Events will be held all over town.

We kept our walks in the neighborhood and Highlander Park today.

Of course, half the fun of the walk is getting there via golf cart. Toby loves the golf cart. He will now jump in, climb up in the seat, and turn around on his own.

He doesn’t miss a thing.

John loaded our CD music from the computer to our phones. We practiced playing music through the car speakers and on our portable speaker in the golf cart. Works beautifully. He has some more to “burn” on our hard drive, but he’s made a lot of progress.

Thank you, John.

Our mailbox flowers have come back.

Monday

We had lunch outside at the Palm Cafe at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. We got the delicious grilled salmon on pita with the mango slaw. There was a very sweet lab at the table next to us. Toby got excited a couple of times, but he eventually settled down. The other dog was off leash, obviously well behaved. The owner and his friend left the dog at their table alone when they went inside to order.

We are working on getting Toby to settle without having to constantly give him treats. We made progress today. It involves being firm and having Toby test us three or four times before he finally gives up.

The food was simply amazing. What a treat!

We had a good walk on the causeway this morning.

It was cloudy and breezy. The afternoon was sunny and in the mid 80s.

Pelican drying his wings in the breeze.

Here’s John’s picture of the same scene. He takes his time and almost always gets a better shot.

After lunch, I made it to the gym for yoga, pull-ups, and dips. For my yoga, I was alone, but I had company for the other things.

Late afternoon walk at Highlander Park

We had blueberry walnut oatmeal for dinner.

John’s making progress on copying our CDs.

We practiced some of Toby’s tricks for class: wave, spin & twirl, around, pray, and crawl.

Sunday

I rode my bike out to Honeymoon Island this morning after our early Toby walk. John stayed home and kept Toby company.

Temperatures were in the mid to upper 70s. The high for the day was 84 degrees.

There were lots of people out, even at 10:00 a.m.

I walked beyond the crowds and enjoyed some solitude.

We are both very grateful to be healthy and able to enjoy this beautiful place.

There was a nice 9 mph breeze blowing.

I got stopped by the drawbridge on the way home, but that just gave me a chance to be still and enjoy the view.

After lunch, we went to This open house. 2/2 1467 sq Ft, fully renovated, $629,800. I liked the flipper’s choices. The second bathroom and laundry were a little weird. The house is off Michigan Ave. (Fairway Circle), just on the other side of the golf course from us, near the community center.

Lots of large oak trees in front and back. The back yard is pie-shaped and huge.

We stopped by after walking Toby at Highlander Park, so we had to go in one at a time.

John sent me this collection of bird pictures from the last few days.

We made one last trip in the golf cart with Toby after dinner to Highlander Park. It was a bit too hot to walk in the neighborhood when Toby wanted to go.

John got a good picture of the art center. We want to come here for lunch again, maybe tomorrow?

Toby’s enjoying the golden hour before sunset.
