Tuesday

We took Toby to the Dunedin Community Center this afternoon. Isn't that a great picture? He's starting to look more and more like a lab/hound mix, as his vet suggested. I love the way he crosses his paws.

Can you believe that there is a group of ibises twenty feet away and he's just looking at them? For these pictures, I wasn't even holding the leash.

John says it looks like he has a Hitler mustache under his nose. Now that he's pointed it out I can't stop seeing it. The pigment on the bottom tip of his nose is dark brown, like his spot and like the skin around that eye. The rest of his pigment is pink, including the rest of his nose and foot pads. The eye on the white side of his face has pink pigment around it.

It was 90 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon, but it didn't feel like it. The humidity was only 59%. Supposedly, Tampa was the hottest city in the nation today at 91.4 degrees.

Contemplating the ibises.

It was 82 degrees and partly cloudy when we walked Toby this morning on the Dunedin Causeway. Toby did really well. We passed an Irish Setter who barked at him, but Toby sat and ate treats and didn't bark back.

On our early morning walk, Toby got to meet Jack, our neighbors' dog. It went pretty well. Jack is a bit like Dexter and Dee Dee, so it was good for him to meet Toby.  Toby wanted to play, but it's going to take Jack time to warm up.

We got caught by the drawbridge as six sailboats came through at the same time.

Toby had a big day yesterday. He fell asleep long before we went to sleep.

We met another neighbor five houses down from ours and learned that he used to be the mayor of Dunedin.

I sold my Buzz bike today to a guy who wants to ride with his wife without having to double back to match her slower pace. I think she'll be happy with her new bike. And I'll be happy with our new dog trailer for our bikes (due to arrive tomorrow). I can't wait for Toby to go on bike rides with us. He's too young to go on long walks, so we've had to curtail our activity the past two weeks, especially after his surgery. In time, I'd like to try another electric bike.

We saw a hawk on our late afternoon walk.

Two of our neighbors stopped to talk while they were in their truck on the way to buy a golf cart. (Golf carts are not just for golf around here. The city allows them on most of the city streets--with a permit.) While we were talking, we noticed another nearby neighbor coming down the street with two German Shepherds. She was blocked by us and the truck, but she was waiting patiently. We moved aside to a driveway to give her half of a roadway to pass between us and the truck. You could tell she was tense and a little apprehensive. We put Toby in a down position and started feeding him treats. The woman and two dogs passed by without incident. I heard her exhale on the other side. One of her dogs was giving Toby the big stare. Toby never got up from lying in the grass. John and I have never experienced anything like this with a dog. Both Dexter and Dee Dee were triggered by dogs.

We had a super salad for dinner. We got interrupted three times by Toby who quietly walked to the back door and sat down on the mat. That means we've trained him (or rather he's trained us) to take him outside. Apparently, he needed a longer outing than we gave him because as soon as he came in the first time after peeing, he needed to go out to poop. Then pee again on the third trip. We gave up and took him on a longer walk. That's what success looks like.

Pretty soon, he's not going to be a puppy anymore and will start to assert his adult personality. So, we're enjoying him while he's sweet and nearly perfect.

  1. You and John deserve a dog like Toby’s personality. What a pleasure he must be when you are out and about. Happy to hear your neighbor stories. Take photos when you get Toby’s cart. Should be great fun to introduce Toby to a buggy ride.

  2. The guy who bought your e bike is just like Jeff who bought mine because I was too slow. Not too slow anymore. I try to keep it in zone 1 so I still have to work.

I love that Toby is being a good good dog.
