Saturday

We rode out to Honeymoon Island on our bikes after our morning Toby walk.

It was 75 degrees with a 11 mph breeze, the gulf as calm as a lake.

The water was clear.

It was a good day to fly a kite. We saw three of them.

The south end of dog beach was roped off as the dredgers remove sand from Hurricane Pass between Honeymoon and Caladesi Islands.

The middle beach, Oasis, is the one getting the sand. They are making progress.

These palm trees marked high tide before the nourishment. So all that sand from the trees to the water is new. The black pipes are temporary, of course. The line of sight between the palms from this vantage point roughly marks the edge of the parking lot that was crumbling into the gulf.

To the left where you see the stake near the grass is where there used to be a wooden swing. We’ve had picnics there. The erosion of the water washed away the foundation of the swing, so the rangers had to remove it.

That might help you to see just how much sand has been added.

Not only does the new beach extend out, but it is also 4-5 feet higher. That’s a lot of sand.

The beach at Bath House #1 will have to wait for the state/federal beach restoration project, as I understand it. There is still some beach here and the usual limestone rocks in places.

South beach

BH #2

This is north beach, the widest beach before the restoration of Oasis, but it too has suffered from erosion.

There were lots of people out today, and they were mostly crowded here at north beach because of the nourishment projects.

John spotted a pelican enjoying the fish in fresh water Lake Saundra. It was a beautiful day with 37% humidity.

This morning’s early walk at 68 degrees was actually cool and required long sleeves.

John took these pictures of the flowers blooming on a royal palm in the neighborhood.

Toby overseeing John ordering dinner from Juan’s Mexican Grill.

We split a large burrito and it’s just the right amount of food.

Today’s bike route to Honeymoon Island

Miles walked: 5.2
Miles biked: 11.66
