We started after Toby’s walk before it got too hot. Motivation came from a neighbor who said she thought a critter was living in there, more than likely an armadillo. They like to burrow under the foundation and can cause serious damage. I saw him once when I took Dee Dee out to pee in the middle of the night, when she was so sick. He scampered out of the bed and went across the street. I’ve been told they have a primary home and a secondary home for emergencies.
John did the hard work while I did clean up.
By lunchtime we had it cleaned out. We found the hole. John used the shovel to block the entrance while we worked. I’m sure the critter would be more frightened of us, but still . . . we didn’t want to be surprised.
We left the palms, frangipani, and a few other plants.
Now we wait to see if we’ve gotten rid of the armadillo. John filled in some of the hole so we will be able to tell if he goes in or out.
In time, we’ll plant some things, but they will be small, leaving plenty of free space to make it less inviting for burrowing animals.
John made more progress dismantling this large shrub. This side of the front bed is next. There’s also a critter hole on this side, but I’m not sure it’s occupied. But we will clear out some of the overgrowth to make it less hospitable.
We had Chinese takeout for dinner.
Toby got a bit ignored today with all the yard work. We kept interrupting his morning nap.
I took him out to pee while we were working and he took off running and ran me right into a low-hanging branch of the magnolia tree, knocking me to the ground. I heard the crinkling of cartilage in my neck. It hurt like hell, but it somehow loosened up my neck. That’s the second time he’s conked me on the head and helped my neck. Go figure!
We are exhausted, but found time to ride our bikes to the gym for the Friday workout.
Miles walked: 6.5
Miles biked: 5.52

You are sounding more and more like me but I hired someone to do that to my yard. Also the konking on the head reminds me of my spill on the driveway.
ReplyDeleteYour house is so pretty.
I would have hired someone, but John wanted to do it.
ReplyDeleteThe bed looks worse now, but it’ll look better when we finish.
John thinks he can do the plant selection.
Bravo quite a job. Ya’ll did it well. Lots of labor. You will love the new look. Ouch re your low limb magnolia meeting. I know that hurt. How did this fall and your back go? How is your neck today? Look forward to further photos.
