Thursday

A construction worker came this morning to install the shower shelf and wash cloth hooks underneath. The hooks will also hold the squeegee for wiping the water off of the tiles.

He removed the film on the tub. We're still trying to decide on a glass tub enclosure or a shower curtain and rod. We're going to think about it some more.

He installed the toilet paper holder. We may add two hooks above the toilet for towels or we may buy a rack that would hold folded towels. There's not a lot of storage in the vanity, but there may be enough. We're trying to keep everything simple and not add any clutter.

He replaced the door stop wood trim that got banged up during demolition. I caulked the nail holes and will paint it soon.

And he installed the exhaust vent fan cover. The mirror guy comes tomorrow to install the mirror.

Knowing that I had the space to myself this afternoon, I set about to install the new deadbolt. Our designer pointed out that our handle and deadbolt are installed incorrectly, as you can see above. The deadbolt is supposed to go on top and the handle underneath.

All I have, currently, is the deadbolt, so I installed the new deadbolt on top of the old one. I'll install the new handle on the bottom when it arrives next week.

As it turns out, the old locksets were also Kwikset. Installation was pretty easy even though there were no directions. This is the outside view. I'll wait until I've installed all the handles and deadbolts before I re-key them all to the same key. Then we'll make copies.

These are the old antique brass hinges on the laundry room door. You can see that they don't match the closet door pull. And they have paint around the edges.

Since the new handle will be polished chrome, we wanted to replace the old hinges with polished chrome hinges.

Here's how they look now.

Much better, right?

This is the outside door of the bathroom. The hinges have been painted white even though they were originally antique brass, I think. I started to replace them today, but I realized that they are external hinges: 4x4 inches instead of 3.5x3.5. They also have 4 screws instead of 3. I've ordered some 4x4 hinges; they should arrive tomorrow. I had to order 12, but if we use them on the front doors, they will all get used.

We like this new arrangement, but we need to move the triptych over to the right so that it will be centered over the bed. I like that the window isn't blocked and that you don't walk into the side of the bed from the door.

We think this old arrangement still works. We'd like to get another white bedspread down the road, maybe two.

We took all our unusable loot to Whole Foods this morning to return.

Last walk of the day. It rained really hard in the middle of the night. We may get some more tonight.

  1. I can't believe the difference the hinge change makes in addition to all the other hardware changes. Such great additions. So fortunate you can make these changes yourself. Great change in yawls second bedroom arrangement. Love your blogs. Thanks for sharing.
