Dunedin Community Garden

I was so busy walking and biking that I didn't take very many pictures today, so here are some from a few weeks ago at the Dunedin Community Garden. The link will take you to their website where you can read their story. We were impressed with the tidiness of the garden.

We had some experience living in a co-housing community in North Carolina and they had a community garden. The soil was clay and good for growing sweet potatoes, but that's about it. It took a lot of work to amend the soil, compost, weed, water, make beds and paths. We learned from that experience to be grateful for farmers because growing things is a lot of hard work and very messy. Organic gardens are even more challenging. I remember our first squash plants. We harvested one squash and the bugs ate all the rest. The problem we had--among many--was that not everyone was conscientious about weeding. All it took was for one slack gardener to allow weeds to grow, and then the wind would distribute weed seeds all over our carefully tended plot.

 But these plots look well-tended.
You can see the garden sheds in the back.
There's a nice covered shelter with picnic tables in the center of the garden.

And a really cool bike rack.

The line for getting into Honeymoon Island State Park this morning was backed up all the way to the draw bridge. I read later that they had to turn people away because they had reached maximum capacity. I'm not sure if that is full capacity or all the folks they felt comfortable letting in. I don't believe the parking lots have ever been full.

We rode our bikes out to the park about 9:00 this morning. We parked our bikes at North Beach and then walked back to the draw bridge, then turned around and walked back to North Beach. It was 75 degrees and mostly sunny. Winds were light.

We had lunch and then rode our bikes to Wall Springs Park. The temperature got up to 82 on our ride.

We came home and did some domestic work. John cooked dinner and washed some clothes and I vacuumed and mopped.

We talked about needing to spend more time at home working on projects, but with the pandemic it seems safer exercising and putting them off as long as possible.

Summer school begins Tuesday, May 26, the day after Memorial Day. I need to get busy working on those courses.
