Dee Dee Cumbie/Durrance
Dee Dee was born somewhere near Cedar Key, Florida, around April 2007. Her whereabouts until August of that year are unknown. She came into the life of Perry Cumbie and John Durrance while they were on summer vacation at the Faraway Inn in Cedar Key. They were out walking their dog, Dexter, and Dee Dee descended the only hill in town on 3rd and G Street. She made a B-line for the threesome and never left.
After a few days trying to find her owners, the innkeepers begged us to adopt her, since they already had the maximum number of animals allowed by the city. She cried and howled like crazy when confined to the dog run at the inn, but as long as she was with Perry, John, and Dexter, she was happy. So, she was adopted as the official back-up dog, in case anything ever happened to Dexter.
Dexter and Dee Dee were instant pals, which was quite surprising because Dexter did not like many dogs. But he was very protective of her and she of him. After getting spayed and clearing up her mange, she quickly learned the rules of the house: Dexter eats first. And everything else will be just fine.
Dee Dee received her doggie obedience diploma, just barely managing to pass. But Dexter was proud of her anyway.
She had a wonderful life with lots of walks and trips to exciting places.
She mastered the frog-leg maneuver that she had to give up after her two knee surgeries.
She had this habit of always needing to be touching someone when she slept. Dexter tried to humor her. Perhaps her days on the street scrounging for food left her a bit apprehensive about fully letting go.
Dee Dee became the #1 dog in 2013 when her pal, Dexter, died, and John and Perry headed into the future without a back-up dog.
Dee Dee made it back to Florida in the spring of 2019 in the 4th house that she could claim.

Perry re-joined the pack in March 2020.
She held on to life until Sept. 2, one day after Perry and John began their new life in retirement together.
She was 13 years old and five months.

Sorry for your loss. I'm glad she found you and you all had years of tail wags and hugs. Becky
