I went to Lexus of Clearwater this morning for our 35,000 mile
maintenance, so we got a late start on our causeway walk. By the time
we got underway, it was 9:30 and 80 degrees with a 13 mph wind. Luckily,
with the hitch installed on John's electric bike, the wind didn't slow
us down since we were able to hook up Toby's trailer to his bike. I
could keep up on my manual bike without the trailer attached (and take pictures while in motion).

Apparently, Toby wasn't permanently traumatized from his earlier bench episode where he got his foot caught between two slats.
We are giving him more time for brain development on our walks.

Toby at rest, in deep contemplation.
School's out. Time to head back home.
Later in the day, Toby was super crazy and wanting to chew on everything, including us. We tried distraction techniques, stern "NO," but he just kept ramping up and misbehaving. I went and stood in front of his crate and told him to get in. He immediately calmed down and did this on the sofa. Super submissive.
I picked him up and placed him in his crate with a toy and closed the door. He sat still and was quiet as a mouse. I went to the kitchen to make dinner, but let him out in about two or three minutes. It worked. He calmed down and started playing quietly by himself. No biting!
We were exhausted after lunch. We took an hour nap. Toby woke us up this morning at 4:00.

Late in the afternoon, we loaded him up and took him for a walk at the Dunedin Community Center.
He met a young pit bull and they hit it off immediately. I didn't get pictures, but it was the best play yet.
We were very proud of him.
We took a sunset walk around Lake Saundra and met the new people who just finished renovating a cool house on the Lake. They came to the street to meet Toby and ended up talking with us for a while. They wanted to meet Toby and pet him. Toby was reticent but slowly warmed up to them. He tried to get them to play with him like the pit bull earlier in the day. It was so cute. After he figured out they weren't going to play with him, he lay down in the grass and was a perfect gentleman so we could talk without interruptions.
We've never had a dog like this! 🐶

Love tour parenting skills especially time for brain development. You guys are the best
ReplyDeleteI have had a good day. Mikey and I took Maggie to the groomers and then to Pike’s nursery. I needed a few more plants for my bank. Can’t wait to get home to plant them.
Your parenting skills are on spot. Toby knows he is in a great spot.
