Saturday

Toby had his next to last class in intermediate training today at Petsmart. Once I remembered I had chicken treats that John had cooked, we did okay. Until then, Toby was not performing very well compared to the other dogs in the class. The training is hard, so we have to provide more enticing treats to get his attention.

John dropped us off after class and headed to St. Augustine for a family get together with his three brothers and spouses. He’ll return tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Toby and I have spent the day inside, mostly. I finished watching Season 1 of “The Chair” on Netflix. The story arc went from a depressing to slightly less depressing depiction of the politics of higher education in the context of modern culture. There were some small triumphs in the defense of the humanities, truth, beauty, intellectual growth, and honor, not the sort of victory though where the image conscious administrators get their due and the humanities recover their rightful place in academia. The real power remained with the status quo and monied interests while the new chair of the English department gets the sardonic title, “Fucker in Charge.”

Speaking of who’s in charge, Toby refuses to walk past our property when his pack shrinks, so we go back and forth and then come back inside with haste. Toby is a pack dog and gets easily spooked. He’d rather not be too far from home if there is only one of us around. I guess that explains why he didn’t run away that time he let himself out of the house using the lever handle. We came home from a walk and he was sitting at the front door waiting for us to come home. He didn’t go looking for us or anything else.

For stimulation, he got his dinner in his puzzles. He solved them all on his on. I rewarded him with a cereal box containing treats for his dessert.

He’s been pretty subdued. No games that he’s made up. I think doggie daycare yesterday and training this morning wore him out.

Just chillin’

And napping

And snuggling

Clearly, John is the fun one. We both miss him when he’s away.

  1. What a nice compliment re John. I hope the doggie care will be a great option for Toby. I enjoyed the Toby photos. Good to hear about John’s family get together.
