Friday

Our new golf cart arrived at noon, and as soon as we could finish lunch we were off to have an adventure. We loaded up Toby, which was a bit of a challenge. It took him a while to find a spot where he was comfortable: not in the floor board as we've seen large dogs do, not in the back in the cargo box. The only place he felt comfortable was in the front seat between the two of us. At first, he was hunkered down in the passenger's lap, but as we got underway, he sat up and enjoyed the ride. It wasn't easy.

We made some adjustments.

Unplugged the charging cord, engaged the running lights, and backed down the drive to get on level ground for Toby to get in.

We didn't have a destination, but we ended up at Hammock Park via Highlander Park. We parked and took Toby for a long walk, hoping he'd associate the cart with fun destinations.

The high temperature today was 81 degrees and mostly cloudy.

It rained last night and this morning, so the ponds were full and flowing into Cedar Creek, which drains to St. Joseph Sound.

Here’s our rearranged garage.

Golf cart batteries, the lead-acid variety, have to be watered once a month. The only accessory we purchased was the “watering system” you see above. With a bulb hand pump, we can put the clear hose in a distilled jug of water and top off all six batteries at the same time once a month without overfilling them.

The golf cart seller added these nifty armrest cup holders for the rear passengers.

For dinner, we loaded up Toby in the cart and drove to Stirling Park to park.

Then we walked to Publix on the Pinellas Trail to get a pub sub.

Lovely wild flowers in bloom along the trail.

Toby and I waited outside at Publix while John got our food. Toby practiced sitting and waiting.

After dinner, we headed back to Stirling Park on the cart to walk with Toby.

It’s a beautiful park to walk a dog in. We didn’t visit it often because it was too far for Toby to walk and too close to drive. But it’s perfect for a golf cart ride. Toby’s shy of the golf cart. We can only lure him so far with treats; then we have to pick him up. But we remember he didn’t like the car either at first.

We put him in his crate at home and did a spin around the neighborhood at twilight. We ran into a neighbor who just built his own golf cart. He and his wife were trying it out for the first time tonight. Theirs looks like a classic Model T kit car.
