Friday

John had a dentist appointment this morning, and we’ve been enduring a heat advisory since 11:00 a.m. Therefore we were limited to a neighborhood walk early this morning and go cart rides to Highlander Park this afternoon.

Thunderstorms finally came through this evening, cooling things down from 93 degrees to 75 degrees. Thunderstorms and scattered showers are in the forecast for the next 9 days.

We’re extremely discouraged about today’s Supreme Court ruling overturning a nearly 50 year precedent that gave women control over their own bodies when confronted with an unwanted pregnancy, a decision that will unequally affect poor women and minorities. The rich will always have access to abortion.

But beyond this disappointment is the fear that the decision will lead to criminalizing sex between consenting adults who happen to be of the same sex and overturning same-sex marriage rights. Clarence Thomas has already called for these rights to be undone, based upon similar arguments used to end the constitutional right to an abortion.

This is an excerpt from today’s dissenters on the court:

“One of two things must be true,” they wrote. “Either the majority does not really believe in its own reasoning. Or if it does, all rights that have no history stretching back to the mid-19th century are insecure. Either the mass of the majority’s opinion is hypocrisy, or additional constitutional rights are under threat. It is one or the other.”

To distract our minds, we
watched more episodes of “The House of Flowers” on Netflix.
