Monday

This morning after we walked Toby, John said he wanted us to remove the ugly chain link fence in our backyard, the one in front of the neighbor’s plastic fence. We both hate the chain link fence, but I’ve been ignoring it.

The chain link fence was covered in a metal grid-like fence, tied up with a gazillion metal ties. On top of that was a heavier gage wire fence in places, also tied up with wire.

We had to navigate over the bushes and in between the sprinkler arms.

With a great deal of effort, we removed half of the fence by lunch.

After lunch, I start at the other end after John got bitten by something, and we got to an obstacle. There are two trees framing the last section, and they have grown up around the fence, as have many bushes and ferns.

It was slow going on this end. The bottom of the fence was about four inches underground and encapsulated with roots.

It got too hot to finish. We have one section to finish between the trees once I figure out how to dig up the trees because they are now part of the fence. Very tough work. The rail will be easy to remove, but the posts are in concrete, and the neighbor’s plastic fence is also in concrete, at the same places. I’ll probably use my electric sawzall to cut the posts and the trees. Messy, messy work. Much cussing involved.

I’ve got my disgusted face on, trying to think my way through this project. Today definitely doesn’t feel like vacation.

Toby has broken out in bumps and a rash. We’re not sure the cause. He’s had them before after we first got him, around the same time of the year. But there are more of them. We’ve used his medicated shampoo and it helped for a day, but they came back. The second medicated bath didn’t seem to help. We gave him Benadryl tonight.

We’re watching An Astrological Guide for Broken Hearts on Netflix. It’s light (duh) and quirky.
