Monday

Today was a beautiful day. On our first walk of the day it was 65 degrees and the high temperature was 78. We made up for yesterday.

We decided that the reason we’re such wimps in cold weather is that we’ve acclimated to Florida’s beautiful weather, both physically and emotionally. Cold, rainy days are so rare here that when it happens, you’re just not prepared for it. People get down right indignant.

Fortunately, yucky days come mostly in singles, sometimes in pairs, rarely spanning triple days.

Today was absolutely beautiful and made us forget all about yesterday. All is forgiven. And all is right with the world.

Had we been told to expect six months of brutal weather, we would adapt. We would alter our expectations and change to indoor activities. We would buy different clothes and learn to bundle up automatically.

But now when cold weather strikes (below 60 degrees), we have to change everything we do for a day or two. Everything has to be thought through: how many layers? Do we have to drive? Does Toby need a coat? Is now a good time to go shopping? Maybe we should stay inside and clean the house?

Last year, our routines were upended 10 times. The year before that, it was 12 times. The other 350 or so days the weather was 60 degrees or warmer and we did whatever we wanted to do outside, with the exception of dodging a few rain showers (it rarely rains all day).

Toby found a warm ray of sunshine in the sunroom this morning.

After our morning causeway walk and lunch, I rode my bike to the outdoor gym at Weaver Park and exercised. It was unusually crowded, I guess because of the holiday week. I managed to find myself alone at the end of my workout for this picture.

Toby got a medicated shampoo this evening. He’s doing great, but we want to make sure. He still does a lot of scratching and sometimes biting.

Eating dinner. A neighbor called to give us a portion of a quiche, a couple of small apple pies, and some homemade persimmon cookies with almonds on top. It’s a good thing we eat healthy when we’re on our own.

Miles walked: 14.9
Miles biked: 5.69
