Sunday

 Happy Easter!

We spent most of the day inside again, reading and playing games. I’m 35% into my new book, The Weight of Ink.

After lunch, we went to a matinee at the Frances Wilson Playhouse to see Private Lives.

Standing in the lobby, John said we are finally among our people. I protested and said, “We look younger.” He replied: “No. We dress younger.” We both laughed. To be old and dress young is not necessarily a good thing either. It’s always easier trying to be and dressing like the person you were 20 years ago . . . because you have more experience with that than being yourself in the present.

The play was from the 50s and was funny, but some of the humor didn’t translate too well to 2023. Maybe some viewers found comfort in these anachronisms, but we cringed a few times on assumptions about men, women, foreigners, etc. For example, a guy who is a randy in the 1950s, someone seen as an almost admirable tough guy, is easily seen today as a cad, a jerk, and a misogynist.

We saw a preview of next season’s offerings, and we saw several more modern plays that we intend to see.

We both agreed that there is something uplifting, almost magical, about live theater. If nothing else, we got a break from reading, walking, and the mundane responsibilities of house keeping.

  1. Good for you. I love live theatre. We went to Knollwood. Came straight back to High Rock and spent the afternoon trying to find a warm spot in the sunshine. Not successful. I worked on a puzzle and finished a book called Tobacco Wives about the tobacco industry and the coverup that nicotine was good for you. Sure it made a lot of money for WS and provided jobs but at a huge expense to the health of those who got hooked.
