Today was supposed to be about touch up painting the laundry room trim. When I finished, we realized that the white trim and door paint was too bright white for the cabinets. We hadn't noticed in the kitchen because there are no doors and trim in the kitchen itself, just in the surrounding rooms. But here in the laundry room, the contrasts were awful, as you can see above.
The white trim looked great against the gray.
But it made the cabinets look pink, the very color we're trying to get rid of!
Pink cabinets, white closet door.

We texted our designer with pictures. She called immediately and agreed. She said it may be okay everywhere else once all the other things are added, but in the tight laundry room it's going to be a problem. Who knew white could be such a tricky color?
I did research, too. I read all about Snowbound white. It's like going to WebMD if you have a cold: you think you have some terminal illness after a few minutes of browsing. Designers talked about how tricky Snowbound was with other colors, especially other whites. One designer said never to mix Snowbound with another white, always paint cabinets, doors, and trim the same color if you use Snowbound anywhere. To be fair, our designer tried to get us to take the sample home to look at it with our existing colors, but we thought we were safe with such a neutral white. Ha.
So, I went back to Ace and got some Snowbound paint to match the cabinets and repainted the laundry room. In the photo above, you can see how the door now matches the cabinets unlike the first picture in the blog. Everything is toned down and nothing is grabbing your eye.
The cabinets and trim now match.
And the closet door and cabinets now match. Our designer suggested a new knob for the closet door. I'm in the process of sanding and repainting that area. I never would have thought about changing out the knobs. We also discussed changing out door handles, inside and out. I'm sure we'll get to it all in time.
The good news is that we have time to make mistakes and fix them. We learned that the countertop template folks are coming Friday to measure. Our designer is coming with them to help us decide overhangs and to see the two white colors in person and advise on whether we should paint all the trim in Snowbound or just the laundry room.

I can’t believe you repainted but it does look better. I had my kitchen trim painted last year and when they finished the painter asked me to take a look. The new paint was too white when compared to nearby trim. He would have repainted but I didn’t have the heart to ask him. No one has ever said your trim doesn’t match and I have fifteen about it. Good for you. I am wanted to clean my floor grout in my bathroom after looking at your floors.
ReplyDeleteSame here re cleaning our shower and grout. Our cleaning crew takes off from Christmas/New Years. I tackled deep cleaning our bath but gave out of steam before shower. Now I want to do a Perry shower cleaning. Glad your head honcho is coming to take a look. She sounds like a great problem solver. Dad changed our door knobs on Monticello. You will love the change. Hope things will look better soon. Paint colors are tricky. Arrrrrrr! Hope today will be a better day.
